Understanding Total Hip Replacement

Total hip replacement, also known as hip arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to replace a damaged or diseased hip joint with an artificial implant. This procedure is typically recommended to relieve pain, improve mobility, and restore function in patients with severe hip arthritis, hip fractures, avascular necrosis, or other conditions affecting the hip joint.

Preparation and Procedure

At Neo TrueNorth, we prioritize patient comfort and safety throughout the total hip replacement process. The procedure typically involves the following steps:

  1. Initial Consultation: During the initial consultation, the orthopedic surgeon will evaluate the patient’s medical history, symptoms, and diagnostic tests such as X-rays or MRI to determine the need for total hip replacement. The surgeon will discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure and address any questions or concerns the patient may have.

  2. Preoperative Evaluation: Before surgery, the patient may undergo blood tests, imaging studies, and other preoperative evaluations to assess overall health and identify any underlying medical conditions that may affect the surgical outcome. The patient may also be advised to discontinue certain medications that could increase the risk of bleeding or other complications during surgery.

  3. Surgical Procedure: Total hip replacement is typically performed under general anesthesia or regional anesthesia to ensure patient comfort and safety. During the procedure, the orthopedic surgeon makes an incision over the hip joint and removes the damaged or diseased bone and cartilage. The femoral head (upper end of the thigh bone) is then replaced with a metal stem that is inserted into the femur, and a metal or ceramic ball is attached to the top of the stem. The damaged socket (acetabulum) in the pelvis is replaced with a metal socket lined with a plastic or ceramic liner. The artificial components are secured in place with bone cement or press-fit technique.

  4. Postoperative Care: After total hip replacement, patients are closely monitored in the recovery room for any signs of complications such as bleeding, infection, or anesthesia-related side effects. Pain medications, antibiotics, and physical therapy may be prescribed as needed to manage pain, prevent infection, and promote recovery. Patients are usually able to bear weight on the new hip joint soon after surgery and are encouraged to start walking with the help of crutches or a walker under the guidance of a physical therapist.

  5. Recovery and Rehabilitation: The recovery time after total hip replacement varies depending on the patient’s overall health, the extent of surgery, and the presence of any complications. Most patients can resume normal activities within 6-12 weeks after surgery, although strenuous activities and high-impact sports should be avoided for several months. Physical therapy is an important part of the recovery process and helps improve strength, flexibility, and mobility in the new hip joint.
