Understanding Lower Segment Cesarean Section (LSCS)
Lower Segment Cesarean Section (LSCS), also known as a C-section, is a surgical procedure performed to deliver a baby through an incision made in the lower segment of the uterus. It is typically recommended when vaginal delivery is not possible or safe for the mother or baby. Common reasons for LSCS include previous C-sections, breech presentation, fetal distress, placenta previa, or certain medical conditions that may complicate vaginal delivery.
Preparation and Procedure

- Preoperative Evaluation: Prior to surgery, the mother will undergo a comprehensive evaluation, including medical history review, physical examination, and any necessary laboratory tests to ensure she is in optimal condition for surgery.
Anesthesia: LSCS is performed under regional or general anesthesia to ensure the mother’s comfort and pain control during the procedure. The type of anesthesia used will be determined based on individual factors and preferences.
Surgical Incision: A horizontal incision is made in the lower abdomen, just above the pubic hairline, to access the uterus. This incision is typically made in the lower uterine segment, which reduces the risk of complications and promotes better healing.
Delivery: Once the uterus is accessed, the baby is gently delivered through the incision. The umbilical cord is clamped and cut, and the baby is carefully handed to the obstetric team for assessment and care.
Placental Delivery and Closure: After the baby is delivered, the placenta is removed from the uterus, and the incisions in the uterus and abdominal wall are closed with dissolvable sutures or staples.
