Understanding Normal Delivery
Normal delivery, also known as vaginal delivery, is a natural process of childbirth where the baby is born through the mother’s vagina. It is the most common method of childbirth and typically occurs without the need for medical intervention. Normal delivery involves three stages: labor, delivery of the baby, and delivery of the placenta.
Preparation and Procedure
At Neo TrueNorth, we prioritize patient comfort and safety throughout the normal delivery process. The procedure typically involves the following steps:
Prenatal Care: Throughout pregnancy, the expectant mother receives regular prenatal care to monitor the health of both the mother and the baby. Prenatal visits include physical examinations, ultrasound scans, and discussions about the birth plan.
Labor: Labor begins when the uterus starts to contract regularly, causing the cervix to dilate and efface. Contractions become stronger and more frequent as labor progresses, eventually leading to the birth of the baby. During labor, the mother may be encouraged to move around, change positions, and use relaxation techniques to help manage pain and facilitate the progress of labor.
Delivery of the Baby: Once the cervix is fully dilated (usually around 10 centimeters), the mother enters the second stage of labor, known as the pushing stage. The mother pushes with each contraction to help the baby move through the birth canal. With guidance from the healthcare team, the baby’s head emerges first, followed by the rest of the body. The healthcare provider may assist with guiding the baby’s shoulders and body out of the birth canal.
Delivery of the Placenta: After the baby is born, the third stage of labor begins, during which the placenta (also known as the afterbirth) is expelled from the uterus. Mild contractions continue to help separate the placenta from the uterine wall, and the healthcare provider gently guides the placenta out of the birth canal. The uterus contracts to reduce bleeding, and the healthcare team monitors the mother’s condition closely during this stage.
Postpartum Care: After delivery, the mother and baby are closely monitored for any signs of complications. The healthcare team provides immediate care to the newborn, including drying, warming, and assessing the baby’s breathing and vital signs. Skin-to-skin contact between the mother and baby is encouraged to promote bonding and breastfeeding initiation. The mother receives postpartum care to monitor for any signs of postpartum hemorrhage, infection, or other complications. Breastfeeding support, pain management, and emotional support are also provided as needed.
